Aim Motorsport driver Josh Irfan stormed from the B Final to finish in 10th position in the Grand Final...
Comeback King Irfan takes tenth at Larkhall LGM
The Little Green Man National IAME Cadet Championship took place at Larkhall, Hamilton in Scotland. A weekend of mixed conditions saw both wet and dry running over the course of the weekend, proving hazardous for the capacity IAME Cadet grid.
Josh Irfan had the toughest of starts to the weekend, where his kart was unable to take the start of the opening heat due to technical issues before the race had even began! Losing him vital points for the off.
The second heat however proved to be another difficult race for the young Aim Motorsport driver. After starting 8th on the grid, Irfan was knocked back half a dozen places after being squeezed out at the start starting on the difficult outside line.
By lap two he had fallen to 21st place after being multiple contact demoted him down the field. He managed to recover a position to finish 20th in the heat.
The third heat saw Irfan start from 21st position. A steady start saw him begin to gain ground on the 4th lap. He maintained a good pace and overtook six drivers on his way to finishing 16th in his heat - crossing the line right on the bumper off 15th position.
Starting 6th in his final heat, Irfan was once again left with no room on the outside of the opening corners, seeing him fall down the field. He composed himself and regained ground, moving from 13th to 10th in just two laps.
Disaster struck on the 5th lap, as Irfan was involved in an incident with a rival driver, consequently dropping him to the back of the field. He crossed the line in an eventual 19th position to round off a luckless set of heats for the YRDA young driver.
Due to the nightmare heats, Irfan would have to race in the B Final to try and advance to the main final later in the day.
He duly did, after starting 2nd on the grid - he quickly despatched of the lead on the 3rd lap and was never headed, taking the fastest lap and a winning margin of 3.2s at the chequered flag!
This meant he would start the final from 27th position. A great start saw him vault up to 19th position by the second lap. In the wet and slippery conditions, Irfan steadily began to up his pace - by half distance he was running at the same pace as the top 10 and closing in fast!
From lap 10 onwards, Irfan managed to gain a position every lap until lap 14, where an incident infront handed him four positions, taking him into 10th position. Irfan held this position until the penultimate lap, where a duel with the new British Cadet Champion began - eventually going in favour of his rival. Irfan finished the race in a superb 11th, gaining eighteen positions across the nineteen lap final.
Once again the eight year old driver demonstrated his potential, becoming a bit of a specialist of turning around difficult weekends and coming through the field. Irfan leaves Larkhall in 13th position overall. The next round of the championship will take place at Forest Edge on the 20-21 August.
However the next event for Irfan will be the British Kart Grand Prix, hosted at PF International in just a week's time. He will be competing in both Honda and IAME Cadet to fight for the prestigious Kartmasters and GP Plate titles on the 4-7 August.
