Irfan excels on Fusion Motorsport IAME Cadet Debut
Josh Irfan took a 6th position in IAME Cadet and a 4th position in Honda Cadet at the final round of the PF International Summer Series, as his Winter Testing program in preparation for the 2017 season began.
Honda Cadet saw 53 drivers enter the meeting. In a bumper grid, Irfan qualified 3rd overall in his group, onboard his Global Karting machine. This gave him 14th overall after the first group made use of better track conditions.
Starting 10th on the grid, Irfan made great progress early on – setting an electric pace as he starting to gain ground. At the flag, he had gained five positions to finish 5th at the finish – taking the fastest lap of the race on route.
Before his second heat, the heavens opened and soaked the track – making conditions tricky. Once again though, Irfan made good progress and gained six places to take 4th position in the wet conditions.
These two good heat results gave Irfan 6th on the grid for the A Final in Honda Cadet.
Irfan gained two positions on the opening lap on the now floodlit circuit before a full course battenberg flag slowed proceedings for two laps. Upon the restart the top four led the field away almost bumper to bumper as the fading track time led to a short race.
The front four remained glued together for the remainder of the race with all drivers defending to the end – Irfan took a solid 4th position, just missing out on a podium finish.
Irfan made his race debut with Fusion Motorsport, as he raced 46 other drivers in the IAME Cadet class.
On his first qualifying session with the team, Irfan took the 3rd fastest time in his qualifying group – leaving him 5th overall in the combined classification.
Starting fourth on the grid for his opening heat, Irfan was knocked back to 7th position after starting on the unfavoured outside line. He regained two positions in the remaining seven laps to take 5th position in heat one.
In his wet second heat, starting off 3rd position – Irfan made a good start holding his position until the second lap when he lost a position. As the grid closed up, Irfan made a small mistake and dropped two positions on the fifth lap, demoting him to 6th position – where he finished the soaking wet final heat.
These results gave him a starting position of 6th on the grid for his first ever final with Fusion Motorsport.
Irfan lost a position on the first lap amongst the battling for position in the treacherous conditions. However he maintained a strong pace, despite battling with a rival driver. On the final lap, he managed to move back up into 6th position with a neat overtaking manoeuvre to complete a very successful weekend.
The opening round of Irfan’s winter testing program was a great start, not just for his debut with Fusion Motorsport but as a whole with very strong finishes throughout. Irfan will be in action again at PF International on the 4th December for the final race of 2016.
