Global Karting and YRDA driver Josh Irfan recovered from a penalty in the Pre-Final, to gain 16 positions and finish a strong 8th at Larkhall, for the fifth round of the Honda Cadet Super One British Karting Championship.

Irfan starred in qualifying, setting the 4th fastest lap in the session - just 0.03s off the pole position time. Meaning he would start 3rd and 4th in his two qualifying heats later in the day.

The opening heat, starting from 3rd on the grid saw Irfan battling for the podium places from the word go. Despite dropping a place on the opening lap - marred by a batten-berg flag, delaying proceedings for one lap, Irfan regained the position on lap 3 and set about challenging for 2nd position.

As the positions swapped over the remaining laps, Irfan was demoted to 3rd on the final lap - banking very solid points in the race.

Heat 2 was a less successful race for Irfan. A tough start did not stop him from maintain his starting slot  and cross the line in 4th position at the end of the opening lap, however as the grid bunched up with a multi kart battle for 3rd, Irfan was first pushed out to 8th position, before subsequent contact from a rival later on dropped him down to 17th position- which is where he finished the heat.

The two heat results and the position in qualifying meant Irfan would start in 15th position for the Pre-Final.

A great start vaulted the youngster up to 14th position, before racing was again stopped momentarily for a batten-berg flag after an opening lap collision down the field. On the restart Irfan sought about gaining more ground.

By  lap 12 he had made good progress up to 9th position, getting in the mix of a train of karts fighting for 3rd position. In the closing stages the action really hotted up - as the drivers pushed hard to move through the grid, contact was made between Irfan and another driver, dropping them both down the field in an unlucky tangle of karts.

Irfan finished the race in 13th position, but was given a 10 second penalty for being deemed guilty of causing contact - meaning he would start the Final from 24th position

With the intention of motoring forward to recover points lost in his luckless previous two races, Irfan again made a great start to get himself up to 19th at the end of the first lap. He continued to make progress through the field, strategically working together with fellow drivers to pull him up through the pack.

With three laps to go, he had reach the top 10. In the closing stages of the race as the pack infront defended their positions, Irfan took his chance to gain ground by pulling off two clever overtakes, to take 8th position on the line! Another very good recovery netted a 16 place gain for the YRDA and Global Karting driver.

Despite the misfortune of heat 2 and the Pre-Final, there are plenty of positives to take away - as his rate of development continues to improve at an exponential rate in terms of his pace and race craft.

The next event for Irfan will be at the Forest Edge Circuit, in the Little Green Man Series on August 20-21, where he will be back in action in IAME Cadets with Aim Motorsport.
